The Business of Writing

Thank You for Being A Friend

I came to this program with high excitement and expectations.  I was proud that I would be earning an MFA degree in Creative Writing. Finally, I would learn how to make my stories come to life and become a much better writer.  Most of the online professors have been encouraging, supportive, kind, and informative.

I believed that this journey would be new and full of surprises, and so far, it has. There have been a few times along the way that I thought, have I taken the wrong classes?  It seems that I’ve had to re-learn how to learn and that interpretations are different for each person. Giving feedback to other adults has taught me this over these last six months.

There have been many frustrating moments and I have wanted to drop the program.  However, I decided to “woman” up and learn all that I can, so that I can take this information with me into the next phase of my life. To be fair, I am learning how to tell a story correctly. These classes have taught me about character development, story building, and the overall structure of telling a good story. There is so much I’ve learned while taking these classes that I have to say it has helped me to understand that writing is so much more than what I thought.

I have learned that good storytelling comes in many formats, acts, arches, bridges, inciting incidents, subtexts, and tags, and all this will lead to something called a Final Draft.   Writing for television, web series, game worlds, podcast, blog posts and yes, books, magazines, and journals, will allow me to tell my story in ways that can meet the needs of many, including myself.

This module showed me a form of writing that I was not familiar with, how writing for television works or does not work. I am sorry to say that this is not my forte. I am not looking to write for television or the big screen. However, if I ever needed to convert a book to the big screen or a smaller screen, I can honestly say I now understand the concept and could do the conversions.

Lastly, I am thankful that I have found a group of like-minded students who have been helpful to my journey. I was called a friend the other day by one of the students and that made me happy.  He called me his friend after only having interactions through this online format.  In these troubling times being a friend is something I am thankful for.

The Enneagram I didn’t chose and I am posting here is personality Five the Observer. Delvin comes from a strong machismo Irish family. There are lots of males in his family who think hockey and football are the two best sports in the world and would rather beat each other up rather than eat. The Observer belives they must protect themselves from a world that demands to much and gives to little. Observers look for satisfying self and are not demanding, but are analytic and thoughtful. They are private and detached except from those they care about. Delvin has a beautiful voice that he hides from his family because he thinks they will think that he is soft or not manly. So his family has no idea that he has a beautiful singing voice. I think that Delvin is underestimating his family and their reaction.
